The United Coalition of Nations is a political and economic union as well as political alliance founded after the collapse of the Union of Lanzarote that preceded it. While smaller than the Union, the Coalition aims to make itself more powerful on the international stage through stronger integration both economically and militarily.

Background

After the collapse of the centuries old Continental Alliance at the end of the Great War in 1812, the various Cooperativist nations of Unus Solum made natural allies in the new world order. In 1817, these efforts coalesced into the Union Plan between Arcea, White Forest and Enshaw. In 1818, the Union of Lanzarote, named after Enshaw’s capitol where the treaty was signed, was formally created.

The early years of the Union were incredibly successful. Featuring two of the Unus Solum’s three largest economies, the economic and political pact was incredibly appealing. Ultimately, North Ghurrka, Seabing and later, South Ephesus as well as the United States of Chapultapec were accepted into the alliance. At its peak, it controlled nearly 60% of Unus Solum’s economy.

Collapse of the Union of Lanzarote

In the late 1820’s, the Royal League and the Union found themselves increasingly at ends with each other. The stationing of Arcean Troops in White Forest in 1827 broke a centuries old pact between Karelia and Arcea. In 1830, the Union’s Sentinel War Games were held near the Karelian – North Ghurrkan border during Karelia’s invasion of the Shirudo home islands.

In 1831, tensions came to a head in the form of a flashpoint between Karelia and Arcea. Enshaw had hoped that the Union would provide military support, but their calls for help were denied; the Union never had an explicit collective defence rule and the overwhelming majority of members were not willing to threaten a war against Karelia. Enshaw was ultimately forced to sign an incredibly damaging peace deal. With the loss of confidence in the Union, it ultimately was disbanded shortly after the treaty signing.

With Enshaw’s exit from the Union, it was expected some major reforms would occur. No one expected the outright disbandment of the organization. By the 1st of Life’s Ending, Unus Solum learned that the Union was dead.

Birth of the Coalition

The United Coalition of Nations, announced on the 27th of Life’s Beginning in 1831, maintains much of the Union’s existing economic structure, and was designed to ensure a smooth transition. It also features a board of members that will be able to pass reforms within the Coalition, ensuring it can evolve if need be. The Coalition also features a centralised military command for ensuring organisation and harmony on a macro scale between members. Furthermore, it has a far stronger collective defence clause, making “An attack on one member an attack on all.”

Member States

The Republic of Arcea

A Union of 32 formerly separate states, kingdoms and empires into three Republics under a single federal legislature, Arcea is one of Unus Solums perennial super powers. Built on the ruins of two former empires, Arcea is both the second largest state on Unus Solum in terms of landmass and population. It also has the single largest economy and among the highest standards of living.

A founding member of the Coalition and a bedrock member, Arcea also views itself as the vanguard of both cooperativism and democracy internationally and has gone through great efforts to spread its ideology abroad. It has the largest military, economy, highest standard of living and the best infrastructure. While the Coalition Council and military command are located in contact, it’s understood that Arcea, and more specifically, Nikea, have a great deal of sway over how the Coalition sets both economic policy, trade laws and operates it militaries.

The Hoffnung Zuustland

The conclusion of the Restoration Army’s near 15 year long struggle, the Zuustland is a unified Hoffnung state built on the ashes of the former UHR. While owning solid foundations and having significant production capacity, the ashes of the former UHR is not an understatement. Reconciling the income disparity between the unharmed west and the heavily damaged east will be a struggle for generations. Ethnic tensions and old Hoffnung divides also stand. And with a infamously skittish Zuustrat being forced to deal with unstable states on its eastern border, it’s never a dull moment.

While its east in shambles and much of its south is deindustrialized, the Zuustland gives the Coalition much needed manpower as well as the prized Holstinij dockyards and the vast array of private organizations located there. The Zuustland, which did not even exist when the Union was founded, was a founding member of the Coalition and is viewed as a cornerstone of its success.

The Cape Republic

South Arcea has a long history as a neutral state caught between the former Kingdom of Sudfell and the westernmost states of the former UHR. However, it survived on shrewd politics and a strong modern military. At it’s height, the South Arceans conquered many of their former UHR rivals. However, this all crashed upon itself ending in a democratic coup.

The Cape Republic, known to its people as Kaapse Republiek is now a middle power within the Coalition who hopes to restore the region to its position as a global industrial and scientific powerhouse. Free access to the Arcean market and Hoffnung reconstruction contracts have caused an economic boom in the country.

Republic of South Ephesus

Made from the ashes of the fallen 1st Dothan Empire, South Ephesus was initially the Arcean Sector of Occupation in the Alwenactha. In 1820, the Arcean military governor relinquished control and Arcean Sector gained the ability for vote for its own governor. In 1829, it had been planned for the Arcean Sector and Shirudo Sector in the North to unify. However, a lack of rebuilding and development in the North somewhat undermined plans, leading to a “No” vote in a unification referendum. Instead, the south became the Republic of South Ephesus and joined the Union of Lanzarote and was among the founding members of the Coalition when that collapsed. While still a not a rich nation, it has the fastest growing economy in the world with Rio Tajo being the center of this development

White Forest Confederation

Meant to be a sort of fictional buffer state with no national identity in a contentious border zone between Arcea and Karelia, White Forest has instead developed in a culturally diverse and strongly independent nation. In joining the Union, White Forest kicked off a downwards spiral in Union – Royal League relations, one they have not recovered from. Nonetheless, as the birthplace of Democracy and a strongly Cooperativst nation, it was unlikely that White Forest would or even could remain neutral.

White Forest, while it is a member of the Coalition, it has had a rather complex position within the alliance given it’s wish to remain neutral in terms of its military deployment. Nonetheless, under its current Aequalist government, White Forest has begun to slowly shed its neutrality.

Orisscan Popular State

Orissca was once one of the few gurrkhan states left alone by the continental powers. The Third Arcean Empire, looking, for easy land to expand into, took much of the countries western holdings, including its capitol Rasman, in the 1720′. Combined with losses to the Dahomey in the 1600’s, the country was effectively made irrelevant. Neutral since then, the country was invaded in 1831 and briefly occupied by the short lived Dotha empire. A revolution against the Dotha occupation led to the rise of a far left coalition that currently runs the country.
