Chapultepec, the Divided Island

Aztlan aims to unite Chapultepec, much like the Sun Kingdom did in Enshaw, or the first Shogunate’s of Shirudo.

Chapultepec is the largest island in the Pangaea Ocean, and the furthest from the continent. Populated by 25 million people, it is one of the most densely populated places on Unus Solum. The only large island not conquered during the Great Hijjian Migration, the various races and nationalities of the island share very little in common with the other island nations and have limited interaction with the outside world writ large.

The climate varies greatly between the different regions of the country. The North West is a combination of coastal plains and tropical. In the South, the Yohuahtzinco peninsula is temperate and can even see snow every few years.

Major Players

Aztlan is the largest country on the island and is a growing power on Unus Solum. The country came to form under Patricio Hidalco during the Great War, who aligned the northern portion of Chapultepec under his aequalist government. He then turned his attention to the resource rich and important trade ports of the Yohuahtzinco peninsula, a significant source of wealth for the Island, which was then controlled by the Otomie Empire. After taking control of this valuable region in what is known as the Peninsular War, he was able to force the Otomie government to sue for peace.

Under Hidalco, Aztlan has become the poster child for Aequalism on Unus Solum, drawing the nation a great deal of international attention. Many prominent Aequalists have made the pilgrimage to Yastlan, the capitol and heard of Aztlan, which has gone from a rather irrelevant, over crowded, under developed, dirty back water city into a modern urban centre known for its impressive architecture and excellent urban planning. Doing so in under 40 years.

Critics have pointed out that income disparity, quality of life and human rights have all fared far worse under Hidalco than they have in Representative governments on the continent, but defenders point to the incredibly low quality of life prior to his regimes rise.

The Quadruple Alliance is not so much one country, but an alliance of the various provinces of the Otomie Empire that rebelled against the Chiapas monarchy after the Empires defeat in the Peninsular War. While certainly not a world power, the Quadruple Alliance is the second most powerful nation on Chapultepec.

The Alliance is composed of Ogla, Tchalaquei, Kituwah and Jtcarilla. Though varying greatly culturally, they share in being undeveloped with few major cities, poor infrastructure and little capacity to produce airships. They’ve relied heavily on outdated surplus from the continent, including a great deal of pre-great war weaponry. Starkly contrasting them against Aztlan, which has modern South Arcean equipment and growing domestic industry.

The government is formed in a manner very similar to the former UHR and shares a great deal with the later years of the once great power.  The Alliance has been marred by political instability as various politicians and strong men have tried to unify the alliance into a single state, often ending in violence. The country has also swung back and forth, sometimes trying to gain the favour of South Arcea, others the Shirudo and occasionally Karelia. This has left them isolated in the very moment they require continental aid to stave off continued concessions to Aztlan.

The Otomie Empire was historically the dominant force on Aztlan. Controlling the rich Yohuahtzinco peninsula as well as the mineral rich island centre, they were able to directly or indirectly control the rest of the island. It had been assumed by many that, with time, the Otomie would ultimately centralise their power and create a nation not to dissimilar from the Sun Kingdom on Enshaw. This never happened, as the countries corrupt and inept bureaucracy slowly began to lose control of the various territories of the island. Industrialisation on the continent had significantly injured the importance of the Otomie globally.

It took years for the Otomie to realise the danger an ascending Yasltan presented to them, and the loss of the Peninsular War largely marked the end of Otomie rule on Chapultapec. The four provinces that left to create the Quadruple Alliance did so with limited resistance from the Otomie. They are now a land locked nation and a minor player even on Chapultapec, sandwiched between Aztlan and the Quadruple Alliance.

Culture

Their are many different languages on Chapultepec. While the Otomie’s power over the last few centuries has made Chotaninega the most widely spoken language on the island. Tlatollian has always been spoken widely in the north and on the Xochime islands however, and the rise of Aztlan has seen the languages acendence.

A similar monolatristic (believing in many gods but worshipping only one) religion is worshipped all over Chapultepec. Historically, a name wasn’t given to this religion, but continental researchers have largely begun referring to it as Sahagunism, named after the priests of Chapultepec society.

Food largely consists of fish, as well as corn and rice. A great deal of Enshawdian and Shirudo influence has made for an interesting meeting of cultures on the island culinarily, making Chapultepecian food a popular commodity internationally.
